A Long Road on a Short Day

By Gary D. Schmidt and Elizabeth Stickney
Level 3
Review:

In this simple, cozy winter story, Samuel and his father set off to find the thing Mama wants the most: a brown-eyed milk cow. They start with a shiny barlow knife and make trade after trade as they travel into town and beyond. Will they ever find a cow for Mama, and will Samuel get the thing he has his own heart set on? The plot of this book is slow-paced and may not hold the attention of more reluctant readers, but the story is wholesome, and the illustrations are charming.
