Escape into the Night

By Lois Walfrid Johnson
Level 7
Review:

Escape into the Night focuses on the Underground Railroad along the Mississippi River. The main character is a young girl whose father is a steamboat captain. His cabin boy is an underground conductor. This is wonderfully written and is an excellent description of this time in history. Libby is a naive girl who had been living with her aunt in the city, sheltered from what was really happening in America at that time. The author does a fantastic job explaining all the issues of this time period! It is a must-read for children today who need to be taught what happened. It reveals the bad things without being graphic and shows the good in people too. This is book 1 of a series of 6 books.
