Classic American author Susan Coolidge (1835-1905), author of What Katy Did, wrote a little-known but excellent book named Eyebright, published in 1879. The book follows an optimistic, imaginative girl named Isabella Bright, nicknamed Eyebright, from ages 12–15. Her mother has died, and her father moves her from a Shaker village to an isolated island on the coast of Maine. Eyebright’s adventures are both inspiring and educational. This is very challenging and rewarding literature. The first few chapters are a little difficult to get into, but then the story takes off and kept me captivated. I adore this book.
