Lisa of Willesden Lane

By Mona Golabek and Sarah Robbins
Level 4
Review:

In Lisa of Willesden Lane, written by Mona Golabek and Lee Cohen, a musically gifted fourteen-year-old Jewish girl, Lisa, grapples with the difficult choice between taking the rescue effort Kindertransport alone or remaining with her family to confront the imminent threat of violence and potential death in war-torn Europe during World War II. This is based on a powerful true story that sheds light on the horrors of the Holocaust in an age-appropriate way without too many gruesome details while encouraging and inspiring readers to never give up hope.

Note: The authors have written three different versions of this book: Lisa of Willesden Lane, The Children of Willesden Lane, and The Children of Willesden Lane: Young Readers Edition. Lisa of Willesden Lane is the only version that we recommend due to several instances of taking God’s name in vain in the other two books.
