Fourteen-year-old Thomas Toraz lives at a fishing camp on an island off of Baja, California, with his grandparents. His father was killed by a shark, and Thomas is torn between carrying on the legacy of his father by becoming a fisherman or staying in school to become a marine biologist. Good moral messages are combined with adventure in this engaging story. Be aware that there are several references to the Mexican God Quetzalcoatl and the Lady of Guadalupe. I really enjoyed this story and liked the Audible narrator. Some of George’s books contain profanity; this one does not.
