The Boy on the Wooden Box
This is the true story of a Jewish boy who was saved by Oskar Schindler during the Holocaust. Leyson tells the inspiring and humbling history of his life before the occupation, living with his family in the ghetto, and fighting to survive in concentration camps. Violent themes are prevalent but are written truthfully without being too descriptive. Note that the author does mention some negative behaviors he displayed as a child, such as stealing rides on a streetcar without paying, but the behaviors are not necessarily made to seem acceptable. This is an overall positive story with strong family relationships, courage, and selflessness displayed throughout.
