  • Teenagers being obsessed with crushes and/or having serious romantic relationships is a focus of the book
  • Teenagers drinking alcohol is made to seem normal or like it isn’t a big deal
  • An unhealthy, shallow view of romance is portrayed as normal and acceptable, such as kissing without any commitment, romance based on physical attraction alone, or promoting the idea that romantic emotions can be so strong you are “unable” to make good decisions
  • Children lying to or hiding things from their parents is made to seem normal and acceptable
    It contains crude language or jokes
  • Although it doesn’t contain any profanity, it mentions swearing frequently or in a way that makes it seem acceptable
  • It briefly mentions sexual topics that some parents may not find appropriate for the age of reader

Entertainment Value

All books on our list are chosen to be engaging, but books that rank high in entertainment value may be more appealing to reluctant readers and/or those who are new to good and beautiful books.
