The Housekeeper and the Professor

By Yoko Ogawa
Review:

The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa is the unique story of a woman hired to keep house for a genius mathematician who was tragically involved in a past accident that left him unable to remember more than 80 minutes at a time beyond the year he was injured. Each day The Housekeeper comes to his home, she must re-introduce herself and try to remind him of who she is and why she is there, and the professor teaches her life lessons and opens her mind through the beauty of mathematics. They begin a relationship in which the housekeeper and her young son come to truly care for the older gentleman and he them. She becomes a voluntary caregiver to him in his loneliness and isolation from the world, and he inspires them to be mindfully aware, think deeply, and cherish learning. Even in these distinctive circumstances, they overcome the obstacles to keep their friendship intact. It’s a beautiful story of kindness, compassion, and the humility it takes to understand.
