Yellow Star by Jennifer Roy is historical fiction based on the author’s own aunt’s experience as one of only 12 surviving children in the Jewish ghetto in Lodz, Poland, during WWII. It is written in free-verse poetry, which helps the story flow beautifully even if poetry isn’t something you typically enjoy reading. This is an incredibly touching account of a family determined to survive together in seemingly hopeless circumstances. There are some descriptions of violence and death, but they are not graphic and are told through the lens of a young child. It is a quick read and one that is difficult to put down. It is full of hope, love, and miracles amid tragedy.
Note: this book is written completely in free-verse poetry, a format which some readers may not enjoy.
