A Chance in the World (Young Reader’s Edition)

By Steve Pemberton
Level 7
Review:

In A Chance in the World, Steve Pemberton tells the true story of his life. He grew up with a cruel family and faced abuse and neglect, but always maintained hope and a desire to rise above his difficult circumstances. He found an escape from his difficulties through books and learning, and was eventually able to graduate from college, discover the truth about his biological family, and start a loving family of his own. Although the circumstances of Steve’s life were extremely hard, this book is written in a way that is eye-opening and realistic, while still being uplifting and hopeful. This book gave me more understanding and empathy for others, and I was inspired by Steve’s courage, kindness, and persistence.

Note: this book is based on a true story and discusses heavy material about emotional and physical abuse and the difficulties the author faced in the foster care system. There is a small amount of violence, usually not graphic, but there is one incident that in chapter 9 that is a little more descriptive. Parents may want to read the book first, or read it together with their child.
