I love the message of this book: the power and love of family is stronger than any wall or forced separation. 12-year-old Gerta lives in East Berlin with her mother and her older brother Fritz, while her father and her brother Dominic are trapped on the other side of the Berlin Wall. This family that is torn apart shows fortitude, courage, and strength to reunite and bring others to freedom. There are some intense and sometimes sad scenes, so it is best for an older audience, but none of it is graphic and the heavy subject is dealt with in an inspiring and uplifting way. This was a book that I couldn’t put down!
