A Single Shard
Set in 12th-century Korea, 10-year-old orphan Tree Ear admires the work of the potters until he accidentally destroys a piece and pays his debt through servitude, embarking on new adventures and forming new relationships. Filled with wonderful characters, this historical fiction book promotes perseverance, courage, and kindness while teaching about cultures, places, and people. My 14-year-old son and I loved this book.
Note: there is a mention of suicide in this book. Women who are taken prisoner by the king and are going to be tortured chose to jump off a cliff, preferring death to becoming a prisoner. Parents may want to preview the book or discuss this with their children.
