A Slip of a Girl

Review:

I was moved to tears by the end of this unique book depicting the experience of a young girl during the Drumlish Land War in Ireland. Written completely in verse, A Slip of a Girl paints the heartbreaking, magnificent story of a family fighting to keep their home when the English threaten to evict them. What an ordeal the people of Ireland endured! Patricia Reilly Giff allows us to feel what it might have been like to see our friends lose their homes, watch the potato crops rot instead of flourish, and know that there is not enough money to pay rent. I loved the format of this book, a story written in poetry form; it is a brilliant way to tell this story! Please note that this book contains heavy subject material: death, poverty, orphaned children, and oppression. It is handled appropriately for the reading level, but may be difficult for especially sensitive readers.
