Louisa May Alcott, author of Little Women, is one of my favorite writers. Her book, An Old-Fashioned Girl, is an inspiring story of 14-year-old Polly, a country girl who visits city friends who are much different than she is. However, Polly’s “goodness” draws people to her as she stands up for her morals and is not swayed by more “fashionable” people. Many reviewers said that Polly’s gentle, kind, and selfless character motivated them to want to be a better person. A little romance is included, but it is all very wholesome and appropriate—no passionate tension, boy craziness, etc.
