Escape from Slavery
Escape From Slavery by Doreen Rappaport is hard to put down once you begin reading! It details the true stories of five enslaved people who with the help of others and their own sheer determination were able to cross to the North and find freedom. Try to imagine fitting yourself in a small shipping crate and travelling hundreds of miles, with hardly any food or water, a small hole to breathe through, no daylight for days, no bathroom, because you were willing to risk dying to be free! This is a must read.
Please note that it does contain several uses of the word “negro.”
