Fighter In Velvet Gloves by Annie Boochever is the inspiring true story of Elizabeth Peratrovich, an activist in the 1940s for rights of native Alaskans. Elizabeth is inspiring to me because she was in most ways a average woman spending her life raising her children, but she felt strongly about creating a better life for them. When she was asked to step into the role of raising awareness, although she felt inadequate, she did the best she could and ended up making a significant difference. She is a wonderful example of a normal citizen having the courage to step up and speak up. Ultimately she became a significant influence in ending Jim Crow laws in Alaska for native Alaskans long before the civil rights movement in the rest of the United States in the 1960s.
