Her Own Two Feet: A Rwandan Girl’s Brave Fight to Walk

By Meredith Davis and Rebeka Uwitonze
Level 6
Review:

Rebeka lives in Bugesera, Rwanda, and was born with arthrogryposis, which causes her joints to contract. She is forced to crawl on the floor until her sister, Medea, helps her learn to walk on the tops of her feet. Amazingly, what began as a sponsorship so Rebeka could attend school turns into an opportunity for Rebeka to travel to the United States for surgery so she can walk on her own. This book was hard to put down! Rebeka’s journey displays themes of strong family bonds, bravery, kindness, perseverance, trust, faith, courage, creativity, and the list goes on and on. This story would be a great family read aloud and/or a correlated book during a unit on character traits, showing how people with many struggles can still show God’s fruit of the spirit.
