Mary and the Trail of Tears: A Cherokee Removal Survival Story
This book tells the story of 12-year-old Mary and her Cherokee family as they are forced to leave their home. Through this extremely difficult time, Mary finds the good in her situation and helps her family to stay hopeful and courageous. The events that happen to Mary and her family are quite sad and may be hard for sensitive readers, but I felt it is written in a way that opens readers’ eyes to how tragic the situation truly was without being too heavy or dark. I loved how it focused on family relationships and staying positive without watering down the difficulties many Cherokee families went through.
