Outlaw Red by Jim Kjelgaard is an animal adventure story set in the wilderness of the Eastern United States. The book is told from the perspective of a prize-winning Irish setter dog as well as the man who cares for him. I enjoyed the wonderful literary quality of this book, the adventures, the pacing, the factual, realistic knowledge provided of the natural world and animals, the moral conflict at the heart of the tale, and the overall message of loyalty, goodness, and justice. This book had a very satisfying ending. The book does contain some mature topics such as accidental murder of a man and the death of animals, the harsh reality of the wilderness, and predators, but it is handled in a way that is not overly graphic and in the end truth and justice prevail.
