She Stood for Freedom
She Stood for Freedom by Loki Mulholland documents Joan Trumpauer Mulholland’s involvement during the Civil Rights Movement. Although white and raised in a Southern home divided on the acceptance of different races, Joan made the decision as a young adult to stand up for what was right and be an active advocate for those who were denied fundamental equality. Joan never cowered or gave up, despite multiple arrests for peaceful protesting, brushes with death, and many sacrifices. I was struck by her heroism as she admirably stands her ground and pushes forward in the fight for equality for others.
Note: This book contains several uses of the word “negro” in historical context.
