Local Legends Series

Review:

I read this series as a family read aloud and we didn’t want to stop! As a sports loving family, I was especially thrilled to have a book that showed great examples of sportsmanship and teamwork. There were also great example of how to avoid conflict when others choose to be mean.

In the first book in the series, The High Cheese, Billy is a 12 year old boy who LOVES baseball and is an accomplished year round player from California. Upon receiving news of his widowed grandma’s heath, Billy and his mom make a move to Nebraska for the summer to help her. Disappointed about missing time with his team, Billy soon finds that his grandma’s neighbor is a Little League Coach. He invites Billy to play for his team. Upon finding out just how great a ball player Billy is, the coach tells Billy he would be a better fit for their opposing team: one who is more accomplished, has better players and is more to Billy’s playing level. The decision is up to Billy.
