The Long Way to a New Land by Joan Sandin is a lovely early reader. We join Carl Erik and his family as they emigrate by sea from the harsh farm life they are living in Sweden to the hopeful and exciting new opportunities in America. This book is very well done and narrates the hardships and trials that Swedish Emigrants had to endure as they traveled, but it’s done in a light and acceptable way for a young reader. This historical fiction story of a family’s hope and desire for America gives early readers an opportunity to understand what Emigration was really like.
