Filled with rich, beautiful language and meaningful Christian allegory, this fairytale-style book was one of J.R.R. Tolkien’s childhood favorites. Boys may not think they would like it because it has the word “princess” in the title, but goblins in the mountains, a secret staircase in the castle, and a humorous and courageous 13-year-old boy named Curdie make this book a treasure for both girls and boys. This is a classic that is highly worthwhile and would be great as a read-aloud.
