The back cover reads: “Don had to buy the sorry-looking mule. Its owner was beating it . . . But Don’s father doesn’t want to keep the mule . . . This story combines enthusiasm for animals with realistic detail of ranch life.”
Even though this is a Level 3 book, it pulled me into the story as an adult. This is the kind of gentle, character-building book that I believe young children should be reading in place of thrilling, fast-paced books only about self-centered fun and adventure. The book is 94 pages long with large font and illustrations on many of the pages.
