This is a fantastic Newbery Honor book. Hard work, persistence, loyalty to country, importance of education, bravery, and respecting and helping family members are themes found in the book. The book takes place during the Revolutionary War. Some of the reading is more difficult because some dialogue is written in “time-period” style. Please be aware that the word “Lordy” is used once, and the phrase “Lord ‘a’, mercy, let us be quick.” I have read and really liked other books by Rebecca Caudill.
