Underground to Canada
This is another book by Barbara Smucker that I absolutely love! The story follows the escape of fictional slaves from Mississippi to Canada, but it is based on firsthand experiences found in the narratives of fugitive slaves. I love the way Smucker does not shy away from faith in God in her books. She shows the wonderful traits of kindness, compassion, sacrifice, perseverance, friendship, and integrity while also showing the cruelty of slavery. The book is very engaging and packed with educational value. This book does show cruelty and deep hardships and may not be a good choice for sensitive readers.
