This book is a sequel to Island of the Blue Dolphins, although either one can stand on its own. Another one of Scott O’Dell’s educational and fascinating books, this is the story of 14-year-old Zia and her brother Mando, who live in the Santa Barbara mission. They have heard stories of their aunt Karana who was left alone on an island, and when they find a boat cast up on the beach, they are determined to make a voyage to find her. This book promotes values such as kindness to animals, appreciation for nature, patience, service, importance of family, mercy, and forgiveness.
